Throughout the semester, there have been many articles and videos that I have genuinely enjoyed doing. A few of my favorites have been the violent video game readings and the pornography industry readings/videos. In the Violent Video Games reading and the Shooting In the Dark passage, it was interesting to see different viewpoints on the issue from different perspectives. As someone who frequently plays these games like Call of Duty, and other violent games, I didn't really think they affected me. After reading some of the studies that were done, they can affect a person's mood/actions directly after playing which is something I found interesting.
Another topic that was pretty interesting to learn more about was the pornography industry. This is a topic that is rarely taught in schools, so it was pretty nice to learn about something that was considered taboo to talk about. I especially liked the video about the Duke pornstar because it shows that not everybody supports this behavior even though she is doing it mostly for money.
There have been some readings and videos that I haven't enjoyed as much. For example, the Rise of the Lavish Wedding was one that I personally didn't find as engaging. The topic of weddings and the history of them just didn't connect for me and had me bored while reading it. I did like the Say Yes to the Dress video we watched in class because it shows how crazy some brides are by spending that much money on their dresses.

ReplyDeleteI agree that the reading about violent video games was really interesting. I felt that I learned the most during that lesson in the class. I had forgotten about the pornography industry reading but in my opinion I felt that learning about the Duke porn star was more interesting and seeing the different viewpoints of everyone.
I agree that the Rise of the Lavish Wedding did not personally engage me either. I feel as though weddings are more personal whether there is a history behind it or not. I too although enjoyed the Say Yes to the Dress video. The women in the video spent entirely too much money on simply one or two dresses for one occasion.
ReplyDeleteThe Rise of the Lavish Wedding was also uninteresting to me; personally, I don't think super extravagant weddings are necessary. But, Say Yes to the Dress is an interesting show to watch; some people spend an obnoxious amount on a dress, sometimes dresses, for one day.
ReplyDeleteI think it's important to learn and talk about taboo topics, like pornography. The pornstar from Duke was shamed for her choice of job. It's interesting that we publically shame some of the people that do the job, but we don't always shame the people who watch them do their job.
